In-the-zone. Zen.  Not worrying.  Acceptance. Taking things as they come.  Giving in to the divine plan.  Whatever happens happens. Peace & contentment.  Everything is as it should be.  Having nothing to show.  Humility. Healing one’s spirit and soul from deep pain, anxiety, and challenge. Releasing pain. Being in the be.

Description & Interpretation

A young person is hanging upside down from a branch that seems to be attached to a tree.  It appears as if the branch was manually erected in a T formation so that one may throw a rope around it to swing from.  Similar to creating a natural swing-set. The figure is wearing a blue tunic with red tights and lime green footwear. His head glows like the Sun or that of Jesus, Buddha, or an enlightened spiritual being.  His hands are behind his back and while one foot is free, the ankle of his other foot is tied to the tree in the shape of the sign of Jupiter (co-rules Pisces), natural ruler of the 9th house (spirituality, optimism, the higher mind, etc).  If he wasn’t hanging upside down, it would appear that he was a confident young person taking all that the moment has to offer while doing a balancing trick.  He appears in-the-zone.

As I began writing about this card, for the first time I wasn’t getting a lot of the traditional meanings of the card. I was searching inside the card for the meaning of “Jesus dying for our sins on the cross and being okay with it all” but I didn’t really get that even though that’s possible too when I talk below about how I got more out of the card.   I may come back to this but for now, I’m not getting anything overly magical, historical, or occult.  Everything seems to be just as it is. At once dreamy while being matter-of-fact.

I also wasn’t getting self-sacrifice (usual keyword for this card). I tried but it wasn’t happening. In fact, I didn’t feel ANY kind of sacrifice. This figure is at-one with any outcome. Not even thinking about it. Just accepting.  So even if this card represents a religious sentiment of “Jesus dying on our cross for our sins”, he seems to be perfectly fine with it.  Doesn’t even see it as a self-sacrifice at all (even if others do!!).

To get a bit more out of this card, I looked at the card before and the card after (the law of proximity) and here we have Justice on the left and Death on the right.  Could the Hanged Man be contemplating his future demise and end to his spiritual karma and justice served?  Is he at peace with what is about to transpire?  Is The Hanged Man asking us to accept change.

Suddenly, this poem or prayer came to mind:

Serenity Prayer

God, give us grace to accept with serenity
the things that cannot be changed,
Courage to change the things
which should be changed,
and the Wisdom to distinguish
the one from the other.

Living one day at a time,
Enjoying one moment at a time,
Accepting hardship as a pathway to peace,
Taking, as Jesus did,
This sinful world as it is,
Not as I would have it,
Trusting that You will make all things right,
If I surrender to Your will,
So that I may be reasonably happy in this life,
And supremely happy with You forever in the next.

written by Reinhold Niebuhr

Apparently this prayer is what participants of 12 step meetings such as Alcoholics Anonymous (AA) begin their meetings with.  Interestingly, Neptune & Pisces is associated with addiction, drugs, and alcohol.

“The Serenity Prayer is a prayer written by Reinhold Niebuhr on July 1, 1943. Early in World War II, the prayer was printed on cards and distributed to the troops by the U.S.O. However, the prayer is reported to have been used before that date in Twelve-step programs for those recovering from hurts, habits, addictions and hang-ups.”

(Note to self.  Research Tree of Life as it relates to the Hanged Man).

Polarity of Neptune-Vesta/Mercury themes of thought vs experience, belief vs. reality, chaos vs. order.

When I see the card, is not the man hanging that calls my attention but the tree itself. Perhaps, is my association with seeing any tree as the tree of life. As the tree, we born, we grow, we experience life and as a tree when its move by gusting winds/life experiences, we either go with the flow of it, or just surrender to its nature..No matter how life treat us.. we have a choice and the hang man sure shows its choice to surrender to what life is throwing at him.. Usually when I draw this card, its comes very close to the cards in the outcome position.. perhaps a message.. that no matter how life become… there is more life to live and learn from.. that nothing happens in vane.. everything happens for a reason..

upright: life in suspension, a decision needed, a decision about to be made, possibly a time of transition
inverted: doubt, regret, overly restrained response to a challenging situation
