Description & Analysis

As I begin this article, the Moon is in 7° Pisces and I had been experiencing headaches and sleepiness! How marvelously synchronistic.

Here we have a lot going on here.  We have the three animals (a dog, a wolf-dog and a crawfish), a long winding path that starts from the water, two towers (watch towers) that we have seen in other cards (such as Death, ruled by Scorpio and the Tower, ruled by Mars / Uranus), mountainous region in the distance, a Sun with a Moon inside of it, and yods falling from it.

My initial impression about this card has to do with upset, passivity, and hidden things.

Sun / Moon

The Sun represents the day and the Moon, night.  The Sun is about life, warmth, energy, and the Moon is about sleep, coolness, rest.  The Moon, in astrology resides in the 12th house (hidden things, imprisonment, dreams, angels, psychic stuff, stuff unknown, karma, etc.) and the Sun in the 5th (hobbies, dating & romance, risk taking, creation, pregnancy).  The Moon also represents emotions, instincts, and memories.

The zodiac wheel, for western natal astrology readings, works a bit backwards in that the Sun is at the bottom right of the chart and the Moon at the top left.  But the fact is, the natural zodiac places the 12th house, Pisces, Neptune at the bottom of the chart and the 5th house, Leo, Sun, at the top.  Interestingly my husband is a Pisces and I’m a Leo. These two signs are considered inconjunct.  We have been married over 9 years, love each other, and have a lot of fun with each other so this is proof that Sun sign astrology is not the only factor in whether you’ll get along with someone. Our Moons are the same though, Virgo (opposite of Pisces)!  We have fights like any other normal couple and I have to say, it looks a little like this tarot card.  It’s more an agitation and irritation than anything else.  Like, why can’t we ‘connect’ on this point? Or that there are feelings and thoughts unsaid – information that could enlighten the conversation if they were said. :-)

Dog & Wolf-dog / Coyote (Canine Family)

The orange and friendly dog to the left gives an impression of extreme gentleness, receptivity, child-like innocence, interest in helping, and a bit submission.  The other yellow-green wolf-dog appears sick, and rabid.  He looks a bit anxious, and ready to bounce.  The both look up to the Sun/Moon but the dog to the right is faced sideways, in an almost defiant or test-of-wills sort of stance. But there is also a sense of being guard dogs — guarding the Moon from lower spirits emerging from the waters.

The wolf is the Native American astrological animal totem for Pisces and Aries.  Being that Mars rules Aries and co-rules Scorpio, this animal in the card could also represent the Scorpion element.

Water

The water makes a circular pattern but it’s uneven, broken, and stagnant — unlike the smooth and balanced swirls of water depicted in The Star card.  This water has been disturbed and is not calm in that disruption.

Crawfish

With it’s multi legs it can move swiftly, stealthily, hidden, and can feel a lot simultaneously. The crawfish is connected with the concept of retreat and in this case, retreating from the pool of consciousness that we saw in the star card. The pincers are there to catch its prey and help chew up what is found. The crawfish (in earlier times called a crab!) is also the totem animal of Cancer. Cancer is another water sign and is ke highly intuitive, family oriented, protective, moody, and one to retreat when too emotionally charged.

Rocks

Out of any card I have written about so far, this body of water has the most debris around its edge.

In the Hindu and Jainist tradition, rocks have spirit and relate to Karma and Dharma.  However, many new age practitioners also hold that there are properties in stones that can have a profound effect on human beings and the cosmos.

In this document, it states that orange stones signify “changing luck, power, controlling a situation, rapid change, and energy” while the yellow stone signifies, “Creativity, mental power, wisdom, scholarship, generosity, prosperity, success, and cheerfulness”.

Given the rocks are at the water’s edge, and the Scorpion is present, it can represent lower spirits and perhaps the dogs are trying to wake-up the sleeping person from a psychic attack.

Two Towers

The Towers with one small window at the top represents being ‘locked’ in and hidden.  You may be able to see out but you can’t see in — there is occult and unknown information or only those initiated know. With the fact that we see these towers, and the Sun/Moon at a distance in the Death card, the place we see in this card may be a place that we can not leave.  It’s a place beyond the earth, beyond the everyday existence.

Path & Mountains

The winding path through the mountains seem to be infinite.  There also only seems to be one way out and that way seems cold, long, dark, and tedious. There are many struggles to reach the Sun, enlightenment, happiness, and clarity.

This mantra is mentioned in Gyalwa Ensawa’s collection of teachings. If you recite this mantra many times every day, you won’t get upper spirit possession or harm, such as epilepsy or paralysis. Upper spirit possession is from spirits such as day or stars, in Tibetan gyu.kar; the middle spirit king is called zen, which stays usually in rocky mountains or sometimes red rocks; lower spirits dwell in water or earth, such as nagas or landlords. Usually, when a person becomes sick or crazy, spirit harm is the condition, based on karma, even for heart attacks and so forth. Lama Yeshe

What Others Say

This is what Henrietta Chan, CPTR has to say about the Moon.  Her divinatory interpretations are marvelous. Here are some of her other Moon interpretations:  Diana, Goddess Tarot | Fenestra tarot Moon | Golden tarot Moon |

Blue Moon

Blue moon,
You saw me standing alone
Without a dream in my heart
without a love of my own
You heard me sing a prayer
for someone I really care for

then suddenly there appeared before me
the only one my arms could ever hold
Then I heard somebody whisper
“please adore me”
and when I looked
the moon had turned to gold

Blue moon, now I’m no longer alone
Without a dream in my heart
without a love of my own

Sun & Moon by Above & Beyond

It’s raining, it’s pouring
A black sky is falling
It’s cold tonight.
You gave me your answer
Goodbye, now i’m all on my own tonight

And when the big wheel starts to spin,
You can never know who we are
If you don’t play you’ll never win

We were in heaven you & I
When I lay with you and close my eyes
Our fïngers touch the sky

I’m sorry baby
You were the Sun & Moon to me
I’ll never get over you, you’ll never get over me.

This Mortal Coil — Song of the Siren: Cocteau Twins

Long afloat on ship less oceans
I did all my best to smile
‘Til your singing eyes and fingers
Drew me loving to your isle
And you sang, “Sail to me, sail to me,
Let me enfold you,
Here I am, here I am
Waiting to hold you”
Did I dream you dreamed about me?
Were you hare when I was fox?
Now my foolish boat is leaning
Broken lovelorn on your rocks
For you sing, “Touch me not, touch me not,
come back tomorrow: O my heart,
O my heart shies from the sorrow”
I am puzzled as the newborn child
I am troubled at the tide:
Should I stand amid the breakers?
Should I lie with death my bride?
Hear me sing, “Swim to me, swim to me,
Let me enfold you,
Here I am, Here I am,
Waiting to hold you”

Description & Analysis

The Bright Star

A naked blond woman (who could be in the beginning stages of pregnancy) pours water from two jugs.  The jug on the left has a thinner stream and it lands on the grass.  The water spreads out into five paths.  One path enters into the pool of water to her right.  In her right hand, the water (from the jug) flows more heavily.  Her right foot appears to be resting on top of the water (like the story of Jesus performing a miracle) as it swirls in a circular pattern. In the background we see four white stars on her right and three stars on her left with a large yellow star in the middle. To me, this represents the Sun. Each star has eight points. The grass seems to be of rough terrain, with hills, and weeds — almost desert-like.

Ibis Bird on Tree

In the background we have a tree with a bird (most likely an Ibis) resting on it. The African sacred Ibis is associated with Thoth, the God of Knowledge, Music, the Arts, Writing, and Science.  The polarity of Aquarius-Leo covers all these themes.

The water jugs connect to the Temperance card which is ruled by Sagittarius and is sextile to the Star card (Aquarius).

The next major tarot card in my Rider-Waite pack of cards, is the Moon.  The Moon ruled by Neptune and Neptune rules Pisces.  The water that is being poured into the pond by the lady, represents conscious emotional thoughts about one’s surroundings being poured into the pool of consciousness.  Aquarius, the conscious Air sign pours the consciousness of humanity into the waters of Pisces, the subconscious Water sign.  Pisces acts like a water filter.

Age of Aquarius

Pool of Consciousness

A Brief Poem

Joseph Naft writes…

Reworking an analogy due to J. G. Bennett (Energies 1964, p. 90), if we compare the sensitive energy to the images on a movie screen, the conscious energy forms the screen itself. Consciousness enables us to be aware of our sensitive awareness. The still pool of consciousness underlies, permeates, and surrounds our ordinary awareness, in the relationship of context to content. This cognizant stillness of pure consciousness corresponds to sitting in the darkened movie theater with no images on the screen, nor sounds from the audio system. Like the screen during the movie, the subtle blank slate of consciousness remains profoundly difficult to recognize, because of its inherent emptiness. Chronically immersed in and concealed by our sensitive energy, consciousness usually remains indistinct and lost to us. The sensitive energy movie so captivates us that we lose ourselves. Transported by the images, we forget the theater, the screen, and even our own existence. Inner Frontier, Includes .mp3 recording.

Description & Analysis

The Justice, Devil, and Death cards connect to the Tower card. And while this card is associated with Mars, it has a Mars-Uranus (in disharmony… i.e. square, sesquisquare, opposition) feel to it.

Tower

Lightening strikes the top of the Tower causing a fire and a crown coming off.  It reminds me of boiling water and the lid blowing off because of over-boil.  We see fire coming from the top and three windows.  The Tower is seen again in the Moon card but there’s two this time.  The Tower represents to me being locked up… maybe even locked up for our sins or that our actions are hidden to us.  And here, God is shaking us out of our sleep or sinful fantasies.

Crown

There is a huge yellow crown. This can represent one of the Five crowns of the Christian God — perhaps the Crown of Life.  That makes me think of Crow Life Insurance. Or perhaps the crown signifie Kether, the crown and top of the Qabbalistic Tree of Life.

People

A man is dressed in a red overcoat, blue tunic, grey tight, and brown bots.  A woman is dressed in a blue dress and red shoes and wears a crown.  Both people are upside down with hands outstretched and going down towards an unseen ground.  It actually seems they may have some distance to travel from the Tower on the mountain. Perhaps the woman is the mistress of the man and they have been kicked out for committing adultery.

Yods

The Yod is the “tenth letter of many Semitic alphabets.” There are 22 (gematric value of 220) yellow Hebrew Yods floating down from the sky. It’s thought to meant ‘hand” or “arm”.  Therefore, we have the hands of God raining down in this card. Yod also signifies Iodine.  Iodine cleanses and purifies wounds.

Yod is in the Kabbalah understood to be the source of all the other
letters of the Hebrew alphabet. Its simple shape is thought to represent
droplets of sperm and the primal sparks of creation. Perhaps it is not
an accident that the shape of Yod actually does resemble a wriggling
sperm cell. Kabbalists believe that the letter Yod combined with itself
in various patterns composes every other Hebrew letter. It is thus the
source and the fulfillment of creation. This meaning is mirrored in the
symbolism of its number value, 10 which is magically 1 + 0. http://www.donaldtyson.com/letsnake.html

What Others Say

Some music that conveys the meaning of the Tower card

Sam Cooke — A Change is Gonna Come (also sung by Otis Redding)

I was born by a river, oh my
In this little old town
Just like this river
I’ve been running ever since
It’s been alone
Lord, I’m coming but I know, but I know
That changes gotta come, now
Ou yes it is, my oh my oh my oh my
It’s been too hard livin’, oh my
And I’m afraid to die
I don’t know what’s up there
Beyond the clouds
It’s been alone
Lord I’m coming but I know, but I know
That changes gotta come
Oh yes it is, my oh my oh my
There’s a time
I will go to my brother, oh my
I would ask my brother
Will you help me please, oh now oh now
He turned me down
And then I asked my little mother, oh my oh
I said mother, I said mother
I’m down on my knees
It’s been time that I go
Lord it’s too late
Very long, oh now oh
Somehow I thought I was still able
To try to carry on
It’s been alone
Lord I’m coming but I know
That changes gonna come
Oh yes it is
Huh, just like I said
I went to my little baby brother, oh my, my little brother
I asked my brother, brother help me please, oh now
He turned me down
And then I go to my little mother, my dear mother, oh now, huh
I said mother, I said mother I’m down on my knees
But there was a time that I go
Lord it’s too late
So very long, oh my oh
Somehow I thought I was still able
To try to carry on
It’s been alone
Lord I’m coming but I know, but I know
That changes gotta come, ou
It’s been so long, It’s been so long
A little too long
But changes gotta come
So tired, so tired of suffering
Standing by myself
Has given up a home
But changes gotta come
You know, you know that I know
And I know that you know
Honey, That a change is gonna come, oh now, oh my
I gotta…

Description & Analysis

The background of this tarot card is black and Grey, suggesting that the scene is taking place underground, in a cave, at night, and/or some place hidden. I’m also seeing there’s a puzzle or riddle to be solved in The Devil card.

Devil

The D-evil is perched on top of a rectangular black box, a pedestal.  He appears as half man, half goat beast (the animal symbol for Capricorn). And like a gargoyle, even. He has grey horns, wings, clawed bird feet, large pointy ears, crazy eyes (whites of eyes above and below showing), a beard, a frown, and an angry expression.  His upper torso is plump and his right hand is raised with thee distinct lines showing in his palms.  After writing up my own impressions, I went around the Internet to check out what others said.

Symbol in Hand

A lot of people are saying the lines in the Devil’s palm are the sign of Capricorn (ruled by Saturn) but it doesn’t look like any Capricorn sign that I know of. And so I thought maybe it’s Saturn they’re thinking of  but if that’s the case, the round loop is on the wrong side.  It’s supposed to be to the right of the cross and not to the left and it’s a tinier cross at the top.  It’s not supposed to look like a sign-post.  It also has a little finale. There’s a good case for the lines representing that sign or planet, since this card is under their domain, but I have another suggestion for what it represents.

Instead, as a palm reader, I see a long life line curling around the thumb, a blended heart and head line which creates a simian line, and a line coming straight up from near the mound of the Moon and ending just under the lines of communication and creativity (Mercury & the Sun). It’s most likely the Mercury line which is also known as the Science, Business, and/or Health line. Because the horizontal fold (simian line) connects the head and the heart, it can be hard for the individual to make decisions (especially around the matters of the heart) clearly yet they can be quite ambitious in getting what they want.  A single mindedness, and strong ego needs can drive them to succeed and often in business or science or industry that requires strong mental and energetic drive. There has also been a connection to chromosomal disorders such as Down’s syndrome, with the horizontal palmar line, as a high number of people with this syndrome have this line (the heart and head lines blended) compared to those not affected by it. Earth hands often have deep and strong head, heart, and life lines and The Devil’s hand is overal an Air (Mercury) hand but it has an Earth (Saturn) palm.

Next, we can see a space between two sets of fingers held closely together making a V sign like the Vulcan salute.  Some see this as a sign of benediction (as seen in the Hierophant) but I do not agree with this either. That sign has two fingers up  and two down. Anyway… The way the Devil holds his hand is like a secret sign or signal and reminds me of Hitler and the slogan, “Heil Hitler“. Many would say Hitler used his position to enslave and brainwash people.

In the Devil’s left hand, he holds a torch of fire upside down.

The Imps

Chained to the box are two naked figures — a  female and a male.  Their size is comparably smaller than the Devil. They have the appearance of imps, sprites, or minions with their mini horns, red hair, and tails (one tail of fruitful grapes and the other with fire of desire).  The chains are loosely around their necks.  The female imp seems to be aloof or awaiting command in a robotic way, and the male imp crocks his head to the right, holds out his hand towards the female while his other hand leans on his hip.  He has the appearance of a statue.

The Upside Down Pentacle

An image in the 1897 book “La Clef de la Magie Noire” by Stanislas de Guaita (reproduced on the front page of “A Pictorial History of Magic and the Supernatural” by Maurice Bessy). The horned beast has an upside down pentacle sitting on top of his head.  Just as Adolph Hitler misused the Swastika — a symbol for good luck, the pentacle (protection, banishing evil spirits, as well as invocation.) used upside down is being misappropriated and is done for selfish ends. It also stops others from being protected and gives further strength to the Devil.

The highest point of the star being turned upside down and landing at his third eye (clairvoyant and psychic sight) gives this Devil more power to misuse magic — black magic.

As written in Wikipedia…

Satanism

A goat’s head inscribed in a downward-pointing pentagram, from La Clef de la Magie Noire by the Rosicrucian Stanislas de Guaita (1897).

Satanists use a pentagram with two points up, often inscribed in a double circle, with the head of a goat inside the pentagram. This is referred to as the Sigil of Baphomet. They use it much the same way as the Pythagoreans, as Tartaros  literally translates from Greek as a “Pit” or “Void” in Christian terminology (the word is used as such in the Bible, referring to the place where the fallen angels are fettered). The Pythagorean Greek letters are most often replaced by the Hebrew letters לויתן forming the name Leviathan. Less esoteric LaVeyan Satanists use it as a sign of rebellion or religious identification, the three downward points symbolising rejection of the holy Trinity

Thelema

Aleister Crowley also made use of the pentagram and in his Thelemic system of magick: an adverse or inverted pentagram represents the descent of spirit into matter, according to the interpretation of Lon Milo DuQuette.[32] Crowley contradicted his old comrades in the Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn, who following Levi considered this orientation of the symbol evil and associated it with the triumph of matter over spirit.

Chain or Cords

Recently I picked up a book called:  Cut Cords of Attachment by Rose Rosetree and I just clued in that the chains in this card could represent the “energy structures” that we attach to the past (Cancer) negative things,  people, and places that we need to cut.

A cord of attachment is an energy structure between two people that causes patterns from the past to continue into the present.  Cords distort thinking and feeling, moving people around like marionettes. ~ Rose Rosetree

Does that look familiar? The two figures chained to the pedastal. Also, Cancer connects to the past (4th house) and Capricorn to the future (10th house).

The chains can also connect to Astral Projection where a silver cord is thought to connect our spirit to our body.

The term, Silver Cord,  is derived from Ecclesiastes 12:6-12:7 in the Old Testament, KJV:

“Or ever the silver cord be loosed, or the golden bowl be broken, or the pitcher be broken at the fountain, or the wheel broken at the cistern. Then shall the dust return to the earth as it was: and the spirit shall return unto God who gave it.”

So the cords can be seen as either necessary to cut to release oneself from what no longer serves us or it may be necessary to keep to secure one’s body to the earth — grounding us in reality.

TRIKAYA & ABBA NARTOOMID: Kathleen Anne Miller says: Used alone Trikaya is a symbols for the astral body, which resembles our physical and is only a part of our soul.  It is connected to the physical body by a silver cord.  When we are asleep, our astral body is free to wander.  At the time of our death, the astral body leaves the physical, taking the conscious mind and experiences along with it.  Our astral body reflects the quality of our thoughts, emotions and deeds.

Abba Nartoomid is an energizer, like Ch Ku Rays.  However, Abba Nartoomid may be filled with astral qualities, which you wish to make physical.

These symbols were also given to me by Buddha.

In the second diagram we have the Star of David Pentacle attached to a crystal or light emanation from above (almost like a comet).

The Zodiac

Zodiac Sign : Polarity: Saturn Capricorn Opposite Cancer Moon. Has Sagittarius, Gemini, Scorpio, Taurus, Cancer themes. Polarity of Capricorn-Cancer themes of parents, care-taking, money, resources, and taking charge. The King, government, and corporations are represented in the house of Capricorn, the 10th house. Capricorn also stimulates Scorpio and vice versa so the Death & Devil cards are interconnected.

Some music that conveys the meaning of the Devil card…

Janis Joplin, Ball & Chain

Sitting down by my window,
Whoa, whoa, looking at the rain.
Whoa, down by my window, baby,
And all around me,
I said suddenly I felt the rain.
Somethin’ grabbed a hold of me, darling,
Honey, it felt to me, honey like, yeah, a ball and chain.
Oh honey, you know what I mean,
It just hurts me.

Say, whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa, honey, it can’t be
Whoa, it can’t be, babe,
Said no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, hey.
Whoa, baby, it just can’t be
Every time I want to reach out my hand.
No, no, no, no, no, babe, baby, never, no, no,
Never, never, no, no, no.
Here you gone today, but I wanted to love you, darling,
Oh, till the end of time,
Yeah! All right!

Love’s got a hold on me baby
Feels like a ball and chain.
Oh, love just draggin’ me down, yeah yeah yeah,
Feels like, honey sometimes it feels honey like a ball, yeah like a ball and a chain
Wonder why when I did the very best I could to love you
You wanted to leave me here, honey in so much pain
Come on, honey, I want you to tell me, please, yeah.

Say oh, oh, oh, oh,
Honey this can’t be
No, no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no yeah.
Whoa, whoa, whoa
Honey, this can’t be just because I want to want you
Does this mean I have to hide to cry, cry all the time ?
I just wanted to love you, darling,
Every day, oh, whoa, till the, to the very end, to the end of time,
Yeah, no no no no no, hit it!

Love’s got a hold on me, baby,
Feels like a ball and chain.
Oh, love’s holdin’ on to me,
Feels to me, oh like a ball and a chain
Honey somethin’ will grab around the knees, grab me in my heart,
Feels to me like a ball and a chain now,
Yeah, alright, yeah!

Say oh, oh oh oh,
Honey this can’t be
Tell me please what am I askin’ now,
It can’t be babe
I know it just can’t be, darling, no no.
Whoa whoa whoa, whoa darling don’t you feel me reachin’ out
Tell me, tell me, darling please
Tell, tell, tell me darling please, I’m gonna need it,
I want you to hear me baby
Tell me why, sometimes darling
I said sometimes I feel I got to know why
Sometimes I feel, honey, honey that I need to know why
I said baby when I ask you
I could use a little help sometime
When I say, I say tell me, come on man,
Tell me, tell me, babe,
Honey I never understood, why when I want to work my hands out,
I want to wear my hands out, I try the very best I can, babe
Why you always want to go, honey and let me down baby.
I said why I always wanna go, honey drag me around.
Seems like anything, it could be the telephone company man,
it could be the man I love, I always got something else going, you know what I mean ?
Over on the other side, say, not quite got it right this very minute.
I’m so sorry babe, I said I’m so very sorry babe,
But I never did promise you nothing, right ? I see what you mean.
Come on, man, now come on, that ain’t the name of it,
And that ain’t the end of it, you know what I mean.
Sometimes, it feels just about breaking things, you know what I mean.
Just like, just like a grave, just like a grave to call
Just like a cry to call.
Honey I never understood and I said please
Lord, I swear I never understood and I say please
I want you to help me, fill it up baby,
I want you to help me, I said allow me to hear
Please, please, please, please, please, please, please,
Honey make me understand why love just feels so heavy on me, darling,
Feels so bad on my back, babe,
Feels just like a ball,
Feels like a ball, ball, oh daddy feels like a ball,
And a chain.

Sum 41 – The Jester lyrics

A jester of sorts
You stand holding your court
Over minions of capital hill
In a bath full of blood
I’m alone, standing still
Under God, you can fire at will

And when (when! )
The devil’s angels come
Take your life and lead you
To the flames beneath
Your head stone reads here(hey! )
Lies the dead who was,
Hung by his head beneath us,
Laying in their graves,
To a nation free for all

A prodigal son
Can’t undo what he’s done
A figure head of capital crime
With a light shining down
As you fall to your knees
To repent would be nothing but lies

And when (when! )
The devil’s angels come
Take your life and lead you
To the flames beneath
Your head stone reads here (hey! )
Lies the dead who was,
Hung by his head beneath us,
Laying in their graves,
To a nation free for all

La la la la la la la la la la la (hey! ) (hey! )…

Dead beat
Six feet
Dead underground

An eye for an eye
Only leaves us all blind
Going once twice there goes your life

And when (when! )
The devil’s angels come
Take your life and lead you
To the flames beneath
Your head stone reads now (hey! )
Here lies the dead who was,
Hung by his head beneath us,
Laying in their graves,
To a nation free for all

Description & Analysis

Angel

An angel dressed in a white garment with blond curly hair and a diadem containing a disk that appears like the symbol of the Sun or Vayu (with a dot in the middle) representing Sagittarius on their forehead. The angel has one foot in a pool of water and one foot on the grass, at the edge. The foot in the water seems to have its baby two merge with another, showing 4 separate toes, in total. The angel’s wings are red and white and signify blood, the heart, and passion.

Magical Symbology

On the front of the garment, at heart-level, there is a white square with a yellow-orange triangle inside. This looks like a magical tatwa. And the tatwa I have in mind is called Prithivi-Tejas. The triangle symbol (tejas) represents fire; a masculine and active energy and the square represents earth. Note that the colours are different from what is generally known to be the colors for this tatwa (red triangle, yellow square).

Avia Venefica states, “The symbolic idea [of the triangle], is that the vertical side represents one aspect, the horizontal side another aspect and the hypotenuse is offspring of the combining sides. The combination of one and another produces a new form of being altogether (a child, as it were).” In Alesiter Crowley’s Thoth deck, this card is aptly named Art! And in the book of Thoth, he writes about this tatwa ““Mountains — violent pressure (due to gravitation).”

Iris

To the right of the angel we see two yellow Iris’.  Yellow Flag Iris symbolizes “hope, faith, wisdom and promise in love, but when singled out by color, the yellow iris is meant to convey passion” and The word or name Iris, in Greek, means rainbow. The blades connected to the Iris are overgrown and overshadow the flower. Two often means partnership or union.  Two of these flowers represents that sentiment.

Iris can be remontant. Early May to early June and some varieties have been known to bloom again starting from early July to early August. So if you are seeking timing in the card it’s likely during this time. September to early December in areas such as the South Temperate Zone and Antarctic.

The plant is slowly spread and easily contained. It is spread by the wind and water. The wind catches the seed and blows it into the water and the water carries it downstream to its new home.   Yellow flag iris lives along stream beds, near ponds, and in marshes. (Source “Wildflowers.” enature.com. . National Wildlife Federation. 3/10/04).

More about the flower.

Mixing it Up

Then we have the angel holding two cups with the angel flowing the water to and from each other.  Above and below.  This reminds me of the Magician’s card except Temperance seems to want to find a ‘middle ground’ and create a ‘we’ rather than a ‘me’.  The symbol for Sagittarius is half man, half horse which results into a centaur. Another reminder of the mixing of two unrelated elements to make something new.

Road, Mountains, & Sun

In the background we see the shine from the Sun between mountains and a path through rough terrain ends at the pond.  The furthest mountains may be snow capped as well.  Cold in the back, warm and fresh in the front. This path may lead to a kingdom.

Virtue

Virtue: Temperance

Mixing wine with water.

Temperance is one of the four cardinal virtues.

The picture of the statue to the left shows a woman diluting wine with water.

In Buddhism, temperance is an essential part of the Eightfold Path. The third and fifth of the five precepts (pañca-sila) reflect values of temperance: “misconduct concerning sense pleasures” and drunkenness are to be avoided.[3]

This statement is a doorway into The devil card which, at first glance is about “sense pleasures”, “drunkennes”, addicitions, and excess.

Temperance is also key 14 and that translates to 5 in numerology. Five is half of ten.  In the middle.

Communication

The first thing I thought of was ‘communication’ when I viewed this card with the intent of describing its essence. It know makes sense. This card is energized by Aquarius (the water bearer) and Libra (balance). These signs are both air signs and relate to communication in various ways. Pisces also finds itself in this card as Aquarius feeds Pisces all of its emotions. These two signs work well together to synthesize emotions and thought with fire (Temperance) being the result.

Exploring the Tatwa & Royal Connection

It’s said that Prithivi-Tejas is connected to King of Pentacles (Earth) and in the background left of this card we see a crown-like emanation and the angel is also wearing, what appears-to-be, a crown. And in Crowley’s Thoth, Fire of Earth (the Tatwa that is shown on the garment of the angel) is connected to the Knight of Pentacles. The flower in this card is also connected to royalty such as the French monarchy and is used in French heraldy as the stylized Fleur-de-lis.

It may be ”at one and the same time, political, dynastic, artistic, emblematic, and symbolic”, especially in heraldry.[4].  According to French historian Georges Duby, the three leaves represent the medieval social classes: those who worked, those who fought and those who prayed.[5] Source.

Is the Temperance heading there or coming from there? Is Temperance the magical element that manifests the Knight / King of Pentacles wealth and riches (whether that be material or spiritual)?

While Sagittarius is a fire sign, it loves to roam and discover what is on earth.  Therefore, it’s not odd that the triangle (fire) is shown contained within the bounds of earth or rather its interest is to explore all of earth without bounds. Vayu-Tejas is connected to Sagitarius whereas Prithivi-Tejas is connected to Leo. Tejas means fire; Pithivi means earth, and Vayu means wind or spirit (air). In this card, all elements are at play.

“Tejas-tattwa, the fifth cosmic element, means ‘fire,’ the brilliant, the glowing, the burning, the dazzling fire.” Source

More about the tattvic tejas & Truth About Tattwas.

Other

We could say that this card carries off from the Death Card.  Perhaps the water we see on the other side in the Death card is associated with the water in the Temperance card. As well, in the Death card the Sun sets whereas in the Temperance card, it is rising.  “Anne Lombard-Jourdan[16] traces the fleur-de-lis to a transformation of the Merovingian crista, a symbol evoking the rising sun (word derived from crescere, “to grow”, alluding to the newborn Sun).”

One foot in and one foot out reminds me of the Star card ruled by Aquarius.

Description

There’s a skeleton with green facial bones holding a black flag with white rose. The skeleton is dressed in black amour with a red plume coming from his helmet. His horse is white with red eyes. The bridle, around the neck has the cross and bones insignia. This can warn of potential poison or danger. The horses right leg is lifted. Close to the horse a man lies. He looks like he’s between 60-80 and of royalty, a King. A crown can be found at the left hoof of the horse. There’s also a child and what appears as a teenager in bed clothing who is overcome with a flush face But what is she overcome with? Sadness or lust? Do you see cherries on the ground near her hand? Next to these young people, is a man of the clergy, dressed in yellow. His hands are clasped, as if in prayer. He appears to pray over the fallen man. The horse and riding skeleton are in front of this scene. In the back we can see a small boat along the water. The people appear to be on higher ground, a hill perhaps. There is water cascading down and in front, two pillars and the Sun peeking through. It reminds me of the Moon card. The Moon card has a Scorpion (Death card) in it and that connects to water. This card combines the Sun and the Moon, the future promise. And there are white poplar trees to the left, near the boat traveling down the River Styx.

To Hades

Beneath the hills and wrapped in night, the cavernous plains below, the realm of Hades.
Mystic Hades, Holder of the Keys of Earth,
Incline Thy sacred ear, unlock Thy deep and adamantine gates, and bring abundant fruits to bear.
All needy mortals pray to Thee, and You reply with riches from your hidden chambers.

The seat of Gods, the basis of mankind is fixed upon Thine Avernean throne in the Underworld,
Distant, unknown to rest, where darkness reigns, and destitute of breath, pale specters dwell.
In dread Acheron, whose depths are shrouded, And Earth’s stable roots are held secure,
Thou determines the fates of the dead, heeding the council of Queen Persephone, Thy wife.
In Thy black chariot, by sable horses drawn rapt over the deep, in the wondrous cave of Atthis, the wide gates display the entrance to Thy realm devoid of light.
Thou shelters mortal souls in the comforting heart of Gaia, in the dark womb of Earth.
Father of Dionysus, of subtle works, Thou alone are the author, visible and known.
Teacher of Mysteries, Rapturous Lover, Power All Ruling, Holy Giver of Hope,
who delights in the hymns of sacred poets,
Grant favor to the work of Your Priestesses and Priests,
And rejoicing come, for Holy rites are Thine.

It is said that a white poplar stands at the threshold of the classical underworld, its roots sitting in the river of Lethe (or the river of forgetfulness).

The bark, leaves and buds are often used to make incense for use in divination, especially around the time of Samhain (Saw-heen or Halloween) when old, outworn thoughts are allowed to drift away with the smoke of incense fires. Louise Underhill

Orphic Hymn to Pluto

[17] XVII. TO PLUTO [PLOUTON]

Pluto [Plouton], magnanimous, whose realms profound are fix’d beneath the firm and solid ground,
In the Tartarian plains remote from fight, and wrapt forever in the depths of night;
Terrestrial Jove [Zeus Khthonios], thy sacred ear incline, and, pleas’d, accept thy mystic’s hymn divine.
Earth’s keys to thee, illustrious king belong, its secret gates unlocking, deep and strong.
‘Tis thine, abundant annual fruits to bear, for needy mortals are thy constant care.
To thee, great king, Avernus is assign’d, the seat of Gods, and basis of mankind.
Thy throne is fix’d in Hade’s dismal plains, distant, unknown to rest, where darkness reigns;
Where, destitute of breath, pale spectres dwell, in endless, dire, inexorable hell;
And in dread Acheron, whose depths obscure, earth’s stable roots eternally secure.
O mighty dæmon, whose decision dread, the future fate determines of the dead,
With captive Proserpine [Kore], thro’ grassy plains, drawn in a four-yok’d car with loosen’d reins,
Rapt o’er the deep, impell’d by love, you flew ’till Eleusina’s city rose to view;
There, in a wond’rous cave obscure and deep, the sacred maid secure from search you keep,
The cave of Atthis, whose wide gates display an entrance to the kingdoms void of day.
Of unapparent works, thou art alone the dispensator, visible and known.
O pow’r all-ruling, holy, honor’d light, thee sacred poets and their hymns delight:
Propitious to thy mystic’s works incline, rejoicing come, for holy rites are thine.

THE ORPHIC HYMNS | Translation by Apostolos N. Athanassakis

18. To Plouton

Subterranean is your dwelling place, O strong-spirited one,
A meadow in Tartaros, thick-shaded and dark.
Chthonic Zeus, sceptered one, kindly accept this sacrifice,
Plouton, holder of the keys to the whole earth.
You give the wealth of the year’s fruits to mankind,
And to your lot fell the third portion, earth, queen of all,
Seat of the gods, mighty lap of mortals.
Your throne rests on a tenebrous realm,
The distant, untiring, windless and impassive Hades,
And on dark Acheron that encompasses the roots of the earth.
All-Receiver, with death at your command, you are the master of mortals.
Euboulos, you once took pure Demeter’s daughter as your bride,
When you tore her away from the meadow and through the sea.
Upon your steeds you carried her to an Attic cave, in the district of Eleusis,
Where the gates to Hades are.
You alone were born to judge deeds obscure and conspicuous.
Holiest and illustrious ruler of all, frenzied god,
You delight in the worshiper’s respect and reverence.
Come with favor and joy to the initiates. I summon you.

The Rose

The White Rose & Rose Croix

A Treatise of the Rosie-Crucian Secrets, attributed, perhaps falsely, to Dr Dee:

The contemplative order of the Rosie Cross have presented to the world angels, spirits, plants, and metals, with the times in astromancy and geomancy, to prepare and unite them telesmatically. This is the substance which at present in our study is the child of the Sun and Moon, placed between two fires, and in the darkest night receives a light and retains it. The angels and intelligences are attracted by an horrible emptiness, and attend to the astrolasms forever. He hath in him a thick fire, by which he captivates the thin genii. Now I will demonstrate in what thing, of what thing, and by what thing the medicine and multiplier of metals is made. It is even in the nature of metals. In the great Lion’s bed the Sun and Moon are born. They are married and beget a king. The king feeds on the Lion’s blood, which is the king’s father and mother, who are at the same time his brother and sister. I fear I betray the secret!

A Child’s Toy or Horn & Child

Alluding to Funeral Games.

Origin of the Games in Funerals

“The[re] are a number of possible explanations of the custom of funeral games such as to honor a dead warrior by reenacting his military skills, or as a renewal and affirmation of life to compensate for the loss of a warrior or as an expression of the aggressive impulses that accompany rage over the death. Perhaps they are all true at the same time.”

Miscelleanous

Death & Devil are connected through Scorpio and Capricorn (ruled by Saturn, Cronos)

He is the perfect and accomplished Sophist, and the great benefactor of the inhabitants of the other world; and even to us who are upon earth he sends from below exceeding blessings. For he has much more than he wants down there; wherefore he is called Pluto (or the rich). Note also, that he will have nothing to do with men while they are in the body, but only when the soul is liberated from the desires and evils of the body. Now there is a great deal of philosophy and reflection in that; for in their liberated state he can bind them with the desire of virtue, but while they are flustered and maddened by the body, not even father Cronos himself would suffice to keep them with him in his own far-famed chains. Translation by Benjamin Jowett, The Dialogues of Plato (London, 1873), vol. 1.

Jacques Brel – Ne Me Quitte Pas

Don’t Leave Me

We must forget
all that can be forgotten
that already has passed away…Forget the times
of misunderstandings,
and the times lost
trying to know how
Forget those hours
which sometimes killed
in attacks of “whys”
the heart of happiness

Don’t leave me (4 times)

I’ll give you
pearls of rain
coming from countries
where it never rains
I will dig the earth
until my death
to cover your body
with gold and lights
I will make a land
where love will be king
where love will be law
where you will be queen.

Don’t leave me (5 times)

I’ll create for you (make up)
crazy words (words without sense)
That you will understand
I’ll tell you
about the lovers
who have twice seen
their hearts catch fire
I’ll tell you
the story of this king
who died from not
being able to meet you

Don’t leave me (4 times)

We often see
the fire erupt
from the ancient volcano
we once thought too old
It is shown that
lands that were burned
gave more wheat
than the best April
And when the evening comes
with the sky blazing
the red and the black
which doesn’t blend

Don’t leave me (5 times)

I won’t cry anymore
I won’t talk anymore
I will hide there
To watch you
dance and smile
and to hear you
sing and then laugh
Let me become
the shadow of your shadow
the shadow of your hand
the shadow of your dog

Don’t leave me (4 times)

Ne me quitte pas

Ne me quitte pas
Il faut oublier
Tout peut s’oublier
Qui s’enfuit déjÃ
Oublier le temps
Des malentendus
Et le temps perdu
A savoir comment
Oublier ces heures
Qui tuaient parfois
A coups de pourquoi
Le coeur du bonheur

Ne me quitte pas
Ne me quitte pas
Ne me quitte pas
Ne me quitte pas

Moi je t’offrirai
Des perles de pluie
Venues de pays
Ou il ne pleut pas
Je creuserai la terre

D’or et de lumière
Je ferai un domaine
Ou l’amour sera roi
Ou l’amour sera loi
Ou tu seras reine

Ne me quitte pas

Je t’inventerai
Des mots insensés
Que tu comprendras

On a vu souvent
Rejaillir le feu
De l’ancien volcan
Qu’on croyait trop vieux
Il est para”t-il
Des terres brulées
Donnant plus de blé
Qu’un meilleur avril
Et quand vient le soir
Pour qu’un ciel flamboie
Le rouge et le noir
Ne s’Ã pousent-ils pas

Ne me quitte pas
Ne me quitte pas
Ne me quitte pas
Ne me quitte pas

Ne me quitte pas
Je ne vais plus pleurer
Je ne vais plus parler
Je me cacherai lÃ
A te regarder
Danser et sourire
Et à t’écouter
Chanter et puis rire
Laisse-moi devenir
L’ombre de ton ombre
L’ombre de ta main
L’ombre de ton chien

Ne me quitte pas
Ne me quitte pas
Ne me quitte pas

Divinatory Keywords & Phrases

A kid hanging off a tree and divining with the powers that be.  Enlightening communication. Dreamy thoughts. Opening to the world. Being open to the world (card 21, backwards is card 12). In-the-zone. Zen.  Not worrying.  Acceptance. Taking things as they come.  Giving in to the divine plan.  Whatever happens happens. Peace & contentment.  Everything is as it should be.  Having nothing to show.  Humility. Healing one’s spirit and soul from deep pain, anxiety, and challenge. Releasing pain. Being in the be.

Description & Interpretation

A young person is hanging upside down from a branch that seems to be attached to a tree.  It appears as if the branch was manually erected in a T formation so that one may throw a rope around it to swing from.  Similar to creating a natural swing-set. The figure is wearing a blue tunic with red tights and lime green footwear. His head glows like the Sun or that of Jesus, Buddha, or an enlightened spiritual being.  His hands are behind his back and while one foot is free, the ankle of his other foot is tied to the tree in the shape of the sign of Jupiter (co-rules Pisces), natural ruler of the 9th house (spirituality, optimism, the higher mind, etc).  If he wasn’t hanging upside down, it would appear that he was a confident young person taking all that the moment has to offer while doing a balancing trick.  He appears in-the-zone.

As I began writing about this card, for the first time I wasn’t getting a lot of the traditional meanings of the card. I was searching inside the card for the meaning of “Jesus dying for our sins on the cross and being okay with it all” but I didn’t really get that even though that’s possible too when I talk below about how I got more out of the card.   I may come back to this but for now, I’m not getting anything overly magical, historical, or occult.  Everything seems to be just as it is. At once dreamy while being matter-of-fact.

I also wasn’t getting self-sacrifice (usual keyword for this card). I tried but it wasn’t happening. In fact, I didn’t feel ANY kind of sacrifice. This figure is at-one with any outcome. Not even thinking about it. Just accepting.  So even if this card represents a religious sentiment of “Jesus dying on our cross for our sins”, he seems to be perfectly fine with it.  Doesn’t even see it as a self-sacrifice at all (even if others do!!).

To get a bit more out of this card, I looked at the card before and the card after (the law of proximity) and here we have Justice on the left and Death on the right.  Could the Hanged Man be contemplating his future demise and end to his spiritual karma and justice served?  Is he at peace with what is about to transpire?  Is The Hanged Man asking us to accept change.

Suddenly, this poem or prayer came to mind:

Serenity Prayer

God, give us grace to accept with serenity
the things that cannot be changed,
Courage to change the things
which should be changed,
and the Wisdom to distinguish
the one from the other.

Living one day at a time,
Enjoying one moment at a time,
Accepting hardship as a pathway to peace,
Taking, as Jesus did,
This sinful world as it is,
Not as I would have it,
Trusting that You will make all things right,
If I surrender to Your will,
So that I may be reasonably happy in this life,
And supremely happy with You forever in the next.

Amen.
written by Reinhold Niebuhr

Apparently this prayer is what participants of 12 step meetings such as Alcoholics Anonymous (AA) begin their meetings with.  Interestingly, Neptune & Pisces is associated with addiction, drugs, and alcohol.

“The Serenity Prayer is a prayer written by Reinhold Niebuhr on July 1, 1943. Early in World War II, the prayer was printed on cards and distributed to the troops by the U.S.O. However, the prayer is reported to have been used before that date in Twelve-step programs for those recovering from hurts, habits, addictions and hang-ups.”

(Note to self.  Research Tree of Life as it relates to the Hanged Man).

There’s Many Tarot Meanings.

Most novice tarot readers and the public believe there are fixed meanings for each tarot card and only the experts (published tarot writers) know the true meaning of each tarot card. Or that only psychics know what the cards mean. As a certified professional tarot reader, I’m telling you that’s a myth.  I hope to get your fresh perspective on what a tarot card means.  NO experience or understanding of tarot required.

My husband and I own over 400 tarot books and in large part consider them reference manuals, dictionaries, and thesauruses.  Yes, they are valuable and useful books or we wouldn’t own them but they are mostly someone’s personal opinion of what the card means.

We want to help the world appreciate that tarot cards are for the people, by the people and we hope you will want to share your personal opinion too.

6.Who are the people in the card? Why are they there? What are they doing?
7.What is the message of the card?

Divinatory Keywords & Phrases

Right use of power. Communication about right and wrong, philosophy, compassion, mercy, and fairness. An iron fist in a velvet glove. Fair and forceful resolution of legal cases and arguments. Finding common ground within diversity. Mediating conflict. Finding structure in chaos. Being fair and honest.  Social etiquette and consequence. Being impartial.  Not letting one’s emotions rule while not letting logic rule either.  Finding a middle ground, a middle path to resolving conflict or making a decision. Practical and reasonable advice given. A legal case with a fair outcome. Karma delivered and dealt.  Being absolved. Tension. Love and War.  A mirror effect.  Figuring out what is projected and what is true. Which side is right?  If falsified information is found, the penalty will be severe and swift. Cultural, philosophical, and religious differences being sorted out.  A way to start over with clean the slate. Contractual obligations.  Marriage.  Business partnerships.  Letters of agreement being drawn up.

Description & Interpretation

An androgynous figure with blond shoulder length hair, big eyes (signifying being open, observant, and welcoming), and a serene yet emotionless facial expression is dressed in a red (passion, aggression, anger) robe with a green (greed, avarice, money, wealth) shawl.

The colours signify having the knowledge and understanding of how feelings can affect what is right or wrong so the figure wears these colors to remind themselves and others that they are only human and can make mistakes too as well as a remind to keep negative and strong feelings in-check as it clouds good judgement.

Their left white shoe (signifying pure intent) pokes out under their robes. The figure wears a three-pointed gold crown suggesting there are three sides to every story:  Your truth, the other truth, and the truth. Justice harmonizes the whole truth and delivers a neutralized judgment.

The square symbol in the middle of the crown (representing Saturn *earthly matters* exalted or rather worked through Libra *the mind*) lets us know that the final truth is the judgement of the figure alone and they will take into account both sides of the story while adding in their own take on things.  There’s also a white square brooch with red circle inside connecting the shawl and placed at the heart chakra.  This indicates what comes around, goes around within the laws of society and that the figure will use compassion and show mercy as it fits the situation. And the square and circle also reminds me of the Japanese flag.  In astrology Japan is ruled by Mars / Aries which is the opposite ruler of this card yet the card embodies both Venus and Mars together.

In the left hand, the figure strongly holds a sword and in the right hand, the figure softly holds a scale which is empty and perfectly balanced.

The Sword represents the logical mind (left side).  This mind is a powerful one that cuts through all that is not solid.  It cuts through the fluff to find the truth and it does it in a strong way.

The Scale represents the intuitive mind (right side.  The scale connects to the ancient Egyptian practice of weighing the heart (soul) against the feather to decide whether the person is true and worthy, and deserves to have safe passage through the underworld to paradise. The scale is also connected to karma — getting one’s just desserts.

Maat was the “concept of truth, balance, order, law, morality, and justice” [*] and also a Goddess. She weighed the heart against her feather of truth.  Her counterpart is Thoth, the God of wisdom, science, writing, and art.

If we were to draw a line from one wrist to the other, we would find a straight horizontal line. We begin to see that much is subtly balanced and essentially in ‘symmetry’ in this card such as the two columns on either side of the figure. Behind the figure we have a mauve curtain draped between the columns suggesting to me that justice is an art that is often subjective and draws from archetypes that are held within the collective conscious of the people’s minds.  Therefore justice is regional, cultural, and based on what society (or the highest minds) deem as right and wrong.

One final note.  Justice is mostly ruled by Venus / Libra.  With that, the figure displays itself as androgynous (embodying male and female) but the figure is most likely female.

Up until this time, I have done 9 major arcana tarot cards. I found this one the hardest to write up because there’s so much going on. There are so many esoteric symbols contained within.

Divinatory Keywords & Phrases

An unknown fate or outcome. Divine intervention. What goes up, must come down. You can make things be whatever you want by dreaming it up, communicating it, and making it happen. The cosmos are here for you, through challenge and blessing. Balancing and integrating all that there is. Taking a chance. 50/50 outcome. Luck is in the air. Gambling. Riddles and puzzles. Games people play. Risk-taking. What will be your fate? Misdirecting. False optimism. Wishing for the fates to turn in your favour. Hope turns sour. Spinning one’s wheels. Taking a chance. Cockiness. Uncertainty. Not thinking things through. Letting one’s beliefs direct us. Being impractical and irresponsible. Focusing on the big picture instead of the details. Over or under estimating. Unreliable and undependable. Exaggerated success. An unexpected trip.  A fruitful trip. Fertility and growth. Not knowing the facts before going forth. Potential gossip. As the wind blows. Sudden and surprising movement and change. Making use of all magical power, ancient wisdom, and heavenly gifts to succeed in life. Past (Anubis – the mysteries of death and reincarnation), present (Sphinx of knowledge, door to what’s hidden — the future), future (snake – the mysteries of life & reincarnation). The cycle of life and reincarnation. Beginnings and endings. Immortality. Messages to and from the underworld (other side). What will be said or written? Infinity and beyond. Meditation.

Description

Four Corners

Each corner of the card contains clouds and yellow winged figures attached to a blank book. Top left– human figure (Fixed air sign, Aquarius), top right — bird figure (Fixed water sign – Scorpio), bottom left — bull (Fixed earth sign, Taurus), bottom right — lion (Fixed fire sign – Leo). The books are blank because the fates have not yet been written.

The Wheel

The wheel and whole card are packed with symbolism and pattern. It is also rich with religious and heavenly symbolism.

Here we have an orange (signifying optimism, friendliness, and action) wheel in the center with letters and symbols inside.

Inside the wheel, we have the letters T A R O or T O R A (Hebrew Bible — Torah, Tora-h) and R O T A (latin, for wheel), the Hebrew letters forming the tetragrammaton of YHVH (Yod-Heh-Vau-Heh which is the unsaid name of G-d). YHVH connects to the cardinal signs of Y = Capricorn (North, Up) H = Libra V (East, Right) V = Cancer (South, Down) and H = Aries (West, Left). The Hebrew letters are read right to left yet the wheel seems to turn in the direction of left to right.

Also contained inside a second wheel are the alchemical symbols and mutable signs of mercury (air, Gemini), sulfur (fire, Sagittarius), water (Pisces), and salt (earth, Virgo). At this point ALL signs and elements are contained in this card.

Around the wheel we have three figurines: A sphinx holding a sword, a snake, and Anubis. All these figures represent hidden wisdom. The sphinx guards the secrets, mystery, and knowledge of the underworld. The snake gives us foresight. The Anubis lets us know what will happen if we go too far.

Four of Everything & The Wheel

Although this card is numbered 10, four is an important number as it represents “four kabbalistic worlds of creation, the four elements [water, fire, earth, & air], [the four seasons - Sprint, Summer, Autumn, and Winter], the four cardinal archangels [Gabriel, Michael, Uriel, and Raphael], and the four cardinal directions”, four suits, four tools (cups, stick, coin, and sword), primitive man on all fours, and so on. http://symboldictionary.net/?p=1355

The 4 rods pointing at each Hebrew & English letter represent: Points, cardinal points, direction, sections of life. The inner circle represent earth and the 4 elements. We could say this is similar to a “natal” wheel and like a Solar Return!

Wheel of Fortune Game Show

When I contemplate the Wheel of Fortune Tarot Card and the Wheel of Fortune game show, it feels quite sci-fi. No wonder this game resonated / resonates so much in the collective mind. And since Jupiter, the ruler of this card has to do with luck, prosperity, and divine intervention it’s perfect to use the symbol in a game show.

In fact, any wheel with inner circles will subconsciously suggest a sense of uncertainty and the unknown, that things can go whichever the wind blows. At the same time hope and excitement are HIGH.

Divinatory Keywords & Phrases

The bearer of information.  I have what you seek.  Live the life of a solitary and gain freedom from nonsense.  Just when you think you arrived, there is more to go.  The lesson is: Progress is perfection.  Knowledge and wisdom is for anyone who is willing to work for it.  Be neutral and quiet in the still of the night. I will guide you in the dark. Everything you need is here.  Here, is where you are.  You can find your way, when you quiet the mind.  Meditate, meditate, meditate.  Being of service to strangers.  A lighthouse of epic proportions.  Pure truth.  The internal struggle between choosing reality over illusion, knowing over not, society over self.  An inner dialogue.  Limbo.  On one’s way back home.  There’s no one right answer. The right answer is a blend of all answers.  A “stairway to heaven”.  A path to spirituality, religion, where you find yourself.  Find yourself.  Mental and emotional peace and tranquility.  This is my knowledge, truth, wisdom: What and where is yours?  All can never be known.  Some truths are purposefully hidden.  When you know the whole truth, you will be set free.  Not really.  It’s the quest that keeps humans alive.  Locate your inner Buddha, your Divine Spark within. Self-analysis. Taking a look at what’s “down there”.  Being outside of social convention but continuing to observe it, nonetheless.  “Silly people, you have no idea.  THIS is it.  Right in front of your eyes.  Plain as day around your self-imposed darkness and illusions.” Get clean.  Stop drugging yourself.

Description

A mature yet youthful man in the quiet of the night.

The darker blue sky, white area stood upon (rocks, snowy mountain top), and gray cloak give a cool feeling suggesting this scene is taking place at night.

The Grey hooded and cloaked mature man with a white beard and longish hair is looking down suggesting he is higher than those below.  He holds up a lantern high, almost like the proverbial “dangling carrot“.   The lantern contains a 6 pointed star (The Star of Creation, Merkaba Star, Tetrahedron) and it’s symbolism is varied.  It is said to stand for the 6 attributes of GodPower, wisdom, majesty, love, mercy and justice. These attributes are what many humans, who wants to ascend and become enlightened, strive to embody within their own Buddha-self or Divine Spark within.  The Creator’s Star is also The Star of David, a symbol of modern day Israel and the The Star of Creation also have Christian and Occultist roots (i.e. freemasonry).

The “light” within the lantern and staff are golden yellow and represent wisdom and G-d.  Light also represents seeing and therefore wisdom. Flares of light break out of the lantern and says, “Wisdom is for all – just come and get it!”  Seek it out the light.  And the golden staff seems to be saying, “I have some wisdom for you to get; however, I won’t give you everything.  I’m holding on to some of what I know.” In other words, we all must find our own wisdom and make our own decisions based on the knowledge we possess inside.

Polarity of Virgo-Pisces themes of service, knowledge, reflection, healing, and discovery.  How do I heal best? Do I make decisions based on my thoughts (mind) or go with my feelings (heart)?

Other

A lot of people are unaware that the tarot contains religious content, and the RWS (Rider-Waite-Smith) version contains early Christian / Judaic symbolism and themes in the picture cards.  It’s not so much the work of the devil when it’s supporting, re-enforcing, and documenting religious and spiritual precepts and story.

It’s said that God’s attributes are: righteous, just, judge, wrath, grace, mercy, and love, incomprehensible, eternal, self-existent, immutable, perfect, incomparable, good, holy, is personal, the creator, life giver, invisible, omnipresent, omniscient, omniscient, knows the future, omnipotent, sovereign..  God sounds like a Leo and a Virgo and interestingly Jesus is a Pisces (the polar opposite of Virgo) — More on God: http://www.mountainretreatorg.net/bible/att.html

If the colinear edges of a regular six-pointed star are connected, so that two interlaced triangles are formed, a symbol results that is variously known as the hexagram, Star of David, or Shield of David (Mogen David). This symbol is most commonly associated with Judaism; it is also used in Christianity and Islam, but on a less frequent basis. The six-points represent all twelve patriarchs (Vav or Man) or tribes. The two “Triangles” are actually the letters “Dalet” and “Yud”, the two letters assigned to Judah. The two triangles form a diamond, which is the gem assigned to Judah. These letters are found in the assigned zodiac of Leo. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Star_%28symbol%29

Carrot and stick (also “carrot or stick”) is an idiom that refers to a policy of offering a combination of rewards and punishment to induce behavior. Some claim that this usage of phrase is erroneous, and that in fact comes from the figure of a carrot on a stick. In this case, the driver would tie a carrot on a string to a long stick and dangle it in front of the donkey, just out of its reach. As the donkey moved forward to get the carrot, it pulled the cart and the driver so that the carrot would always remain out of reach.  The earliest citation of this expression recorded by the Supplement to the Oxford English Dictionary is to The Economist magazine in the December 11, 1948, issue. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Carrot_and_stick

Carrot on a stick is an idiom that refers to a policy of offering a reward for making progress towards benchmarks or goals but not necessarily ever actually delivering. The original metaphor referred to a boy sitting on a cart being pulled by a donkey. The boy held a long stick to which a carrot had been tied, and he dangled the carrot in front of the donkey but just out of its reach. As the donkey moved forward to get the carrot, it pulled the cart—and the boy—so that the carrot always remained just out of reach as the cart moved forward. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Carrot_on_a_stick

Stairway to Heaven

There’s a lady who’s sure
All that glitters is gold
And she’s buying a stairway to heaven

When she gets there she knows
If the stores are all closed
With a word she can get what she came for

Ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh
And she’s buying a stairway to heaven

There’s a sign on the wall
But she wants to be sure
‘Cause you know sometimes words have
Two meanings

In a tree by the brook
There’s a songbird who sings
Sometimes all of our thoughts are
Misgiven

Ooh, it makes me wonder

Ooh, it makes me wonder

There’s a feeling I get
When I look to the west
And my spirit is crying
For leaving

In my thoughts I have seen
Rings of smoke through the trees
And the voices of those
Who stand looking

Ooh, it makes me wonder

Ooh, it really makes me wonder

And it’s whispered that soon
If we all call the tune
Then the piper will lead us to reason

And a new day will dawn
For those who stand long
And the forests will
Echo with laughter

Oh, whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa, ooh, whoa, oh

If there’s a bustle in your hedgerow
Don’t be alarmed now
It’s just a spring clean
For the May queen

Yes, there are two paths you can go by
But in the long run
There’s still time to change
The road you’re on

And it makes me wonder

Aw, uh, oh

Your head is humming and it won’t go
In case you don’t know
The piper’s calling you to join him

Dear lady, can you hear the wind blow?
And did you know
Your stairway lies on the whispering wind?

(Solo)

And as we wind on down the road
Our shadows taller than our soul
There walks a lady we all know
Who shines white light and wants to show
How everything still turns to gold
And if you listen very hard
The truth will come to you at last
When all are one and one is all
To be a rock and not to roll

And she’s buying a stairway
To heaven…

Divinatory Keywords & Phrases

Having the strength and courage to do what’s right.  Giving up the ego so one can reach a higher place. Being gentle when someone’s ego is bruised.  Living life to the fullest, not squandering a moment to what others say is the right thing to do.  Being of service to those that have a hard time helping themselves.  Handling one’s pain and agony in a gentle and moderate fashion.  Being magnanimous. Chastity.  Keeping one’s sexual, primal drives in-check. Giving someone who has hurt you, a second chance.  That someone can even be you!  Not giving up when challenged even if the challenge appears insurmountable.  Things do not come easy but strength to endure and overcome obstacles is on one’s side.  Working with those less fortunate. Caring for those we love.

Description

A woman and the lion instinct

A woman, dressed in white (representing purity and spirituality) with a wreath of roses around her waist and head, bends over softly with clarity, vision, and purpose.  She seems to understand the wild and what-appears-to-be wounded animal instinct. The woman seems to say with her touch: “Now, now, we will make it all better” and that soothes the red lion’s spirit.  The lion’s tail is between his legs, possibly suggesting being apologetic about a wrong-doing.

She has a Lemniscate / eternity symbol hovering over her head, while four leaves point upwards.  This seems to say that something about reincarnation of the body or the body will withstand time and all trials.  And that however long it will take, it will take.  Strength comes in being patient and displincing oneself.

With the polarity of Leo-Aquarius themes of freedom, control, individuality, and creativity are in flux.  Do I allow you to control me?  Are you controlling me?  Am I being controlled, if I let you control me?  This isn’t just about people, it’s about things, philosophy, the mind…  Sometimes giving in can indicate strength.  Such as it takes a person with courage to say they are sorry and mean it.

Other

Personal Reflections

When I first came across strength, I found it very hard to understand. Hard to believe since I’m a Leo. Then I got into the Thoth deck and it was labeled Lust and it was still hard to understand. As I continued to work with TarotSeek I began to gain a better understanding of it. Strength is about (amongst other things) discipline, not restriction. It’s about taming one’s inner or outer beast. To hold oneself in a dignified way. To be vulnerable with someone or something that can be considered of a lesser character, ability, state, or being. Being the 8th card, it can mean being able to ride the wave of power and dark desires. Having a handle on the unruliness of emotion and personality… etc…

The Zodiac

Keywords & Phrases

Waiting to make a move.  Moving to another home. Going somewhere.  Taking a short trip away from home. About to travel but undecided which direction to take. Letting the heavens guide you. Thinking about one’s next move.  Finding a spiritual cure.  Needing to be with one’s tribe.  Waiting for the night to fall. Being clear about one’s ambitions and plans before moving ahead.  Weighing risks.  Indecision.  Having to make a choice.  Frozen in action.  Waiting for the day to turn to night. Frustration that one is stuck with no other options.

Description

In the background we see two clusters of castles on either side of a chariot. It seems as if the chariot and person have left the village / birth place and has just come off the mote bridge, not quite ready to take the next plunge.

The Chariot & Person

The blond person (around 30, perhaps going through his Saturn Return) appears to be cemented into the chariot. They are not going anywhere yet have left to go somewhere.  The wheels of wisdom are painted yellow and the curtains blue with white stars. on the front of the “boxed” chariot we see a red dreidl within a shield, blue wings, and a yellow circle perhaps signaling the sun or Ra. The wings & the circle have a “Egyptian” feel to it.  I often view this set as “first aid” and the chariot as “an ambulance”. A much needed healing is to occur. Sitting in front on the chariot, on grass, are two sphinxes:  one black and one white.  Their tails appear to be tucked under their bellies.  They are not going anywhere.  In fact, it appears they have been sitting there for a long time.

The Person & Clothing

The person is dressed in light armor and wears a crown. Two moons on his shoulder pad, perhaps represents the sign of Cancer and can indicate using good intuition on one’s shoulders and having family protect you spiritually when you are away from them.  This could represent royalty on a mission of re-claiming his subjects in a peaceful manner. His arm bands end in a shell-shape.  Around his waist is a belt of the zodiac (zodiac belt) and skirt has many symbols. On his breastplate is a white square which can represent the Earth Tattva and suggests delays, restrictions, keeping one’s emotions in-check, getting ready for obstacles and hurdles to overcome.  He holds a long stick with a candle type flame at the end.

Description

A naked female and male stand facing forward with open arms.  The female is looking up at archangel Raphael (also known as cupid) as if to say, “I’m waiting for your instructions on what to do next”, “Is  this the man I should be with?” Meanwhile, the male is looking towards the female with some concern but ready to stay or go upon her command.  This image is one of Adam and Eve.  Behind Eve is the Tree of Forbidden fruit with a green snake wrapping around it.  Behind Adam is the Tree of Fire.  In the background we have what appears to be a mountain though I often see it as a volcano that might suddenly erupt. Raphael — who has arms wide open covering both the male and female — is dressed in silky purple robes with red wings of passion.  His head appears to have flames of fire erupting and behind him is the sun which I interpret as the Creator, God, or Ra.  He seems to have come out of nowhere upon the divine will of God to see if this woman and man should be united as they appear to want have happen.  In fact, they appear ready to have sex and procreate but only upon approval.

No ordinary people are in this room.  There’s almost a sense that the room they are in is in a basement or enclosed space with no windows. An imposing figure presents themselves in the middle of the card between two pillars and on a raised platform while two monk-like men flank the figure on either side looking ahead.  The figure appears an authority on a subject and in this case the authority figure is a priest, priestess, or clergy person.  The clergy person’s robe is red with three crosses down the middle.  His crown is golden and three tiered.  He holds a staff or rod, perhaps a divining rod in one hand and raises his other hand with a sign of benediction.

I’m the man. I’m feeling angry or a bit peeved at your presence. I’m ready for action. I’m showing you that if you are ready to fight, I am too. I am a king. I’m mature, wise, yet physically fit. I’m dominant and I will dominate you if we go there. I represent the father figure and male essence. You can embarrass me, my sense of honour, and that raises my blood pressure. I’ll do as I will.  I’m above it ALL.

Description

Emperor of the Romans

Charles the Great was likely born on any of these dates: 1 April 747, 15 April 747, or 1 April 748, in Herstal and this makes him an Aries.

A mature and strong man with a long white beard and hair sits upon a throne hardened concrete or is it steel? In the background he see rocky mountains and red hues reminding of lands that are dry and possibly fruitless. You can’t get much out of the land and you won’t get much out of the Emperor either.

His body is fit and strong so why the grey hair? The white hair tells us of long and stressful battles that turned his hair grey before his time yet gave him much wisdom about warfare. It also shows that he’s got the upper hand at all times because his mind is in fact stronger than his very strong body. He can outwit you. But if you keep the noise down, he will too. It’s a fine point of balance between making a move and sitting back at the ready. Is that a full armour underneath his red cloak of passion, fire, sexual authority, aggression? Looks like it. From the tips of his toes to his wrists, with weapons to wield in his hands if need be.

What are those weapons in his hand? They are yellow, perhaps gold? God represents wealth, even spiritual wealth. On the left he holds a long scepter and at the point in the shape of an Ankh. This represents his everlasting power. On the right, in his left hand, he holds a globe (the globe that is on the Empress’ scepter), an orb that represents earth and with the cross representing Christ’s dominion. But the cross is removed in this card.  What does that mean? The globe can represent that he has the world in his hands, perhaps his world is the Empress. The two objects together, the globe with its feminine energy and the scepter with its masculine, represents possibility for unity and balance. These two items can also represent his tools of war. If you don’t watch out, he will shot-put you or smack you over the head with the stick!

We see the heads of rams at the corners of the chair. This indicates Aries, and this animal is protected. The Emperor protects us but that’s if he sees you as his own. If you are not his, be aware and afraid. Better to join him than fight him.
The Empress is his wife; however, they are both cardinal signs. She is Cancer; he Aries. They know how to rule their respective roosts and in large part leave each other alone in their well-defined roles.

Description

A pretty woman with blonde hair and robust figure sits upon luxurious red cushions and fabric creating a large and plush chair.  She wears a crown of stars and holds a scepter with a globe on the top (the globe that the Emperor (next card holds in his hand) close to her head.  Her robe is long and flowy and the pattern includes pomegranates which we have learned from the previous card (High Priestess) relates to strength, conviction, growth, creation and sometimes forbidden fruit.  In fact, the Empress IS forbidden fruit as she appears to be pregnant as well as married to the Emperor which is the next tarot card. To the left we see a heart with the symbol of Venus, woman on it.

Below and to the right and back, we see a nature scene.  Wheat, a forest of trees, and a river path ending in a waterfall.  A bit of water manages to reach beneath her dress, to the left.  This implies remembering the roots of one’s subconscious.  Where we have been and where we will go.  The nature scene implies the woman is sensual, feels grounded, and alive when communing.

Description

A woman sits solemnly draped in blue and white.  These colours symbolize purity, peace, and communication.  A white cross is located in the middle of her chest symbolizing her love of spiritual awareness and devotion.  On top of her nun-like veil, sits a head piece (coronet) in the shape of a white circle and curved arches.  This can represent phases of the moon, a crystal ball and stand, or a peeled open fruit all representing sight, intuition, and reproduction.

In her hands, she humbly holds a loosely rolled document with the letters showing as TORA.  If we pulled out the document to expose the full word, we might find the letters TORAH which is the Jewish sacred book of traditions and laws of behaviour.  The word Torah means Teaching.  The woman is a teacher; however, she presents as shy, introspective, or hesitant in what she might teach.  There’s an uncertainty and she’s not biting at the bit to tell you what she knows.  So we could say few will be taught by her and likely only those that will not move her emotionally.

At the base of her flowing garment is a very large quarter moon of bright yellow almost having the feel of a large curved sword.  She is flanked by two columns.  One column is black and has a B on it which means Boaz and the other column is white with a J on it which means Joachim.  These two pillars represent the concept of duality while the woman represents middle and neutral ground.

Behind the woman is a curtain with a pattern of *pomegranates (fruit of forbidden knowledge) with its seeds exposed yet in tact (as if an X-ray image), palm trees, and foliage aiding in strength and conviction for what lays ahead.  The pomegranate fruit represents growth, creation, but also the potential that it’s a forbidden fruit of the Adam and Eve myth.  It may be foretelling that any who, enter behind the curtain, may not wholly come back as they were before.  They will have changed.

All of these objects obscure the water in the back which is further reference to intuition and sight, namely subconscious that can not be easily grasped.

*Symbolism of the Pomegranate in Judaism

As per Wikipedia

The Book of Exodus [52] describes the me’il (“robe of the ephod“) worn by the Hebrew High Priest as having pomegranates embroidered on the hem. According to the Books of Kings [53] the capitals of the two pillars (Jachin and Boaz) that stood in front of Solomon’s Temple in Jerusalem were engraved with pomegranates. It is said that Solomon designed his coronet based on the pomegranate’s “crown” (calyx).[48]

The pomegranate appears on ancient coins of Judea. When not in use, the scroll handles of Torah scrolls are sometimes covered with decorative silver globes similar in shape to “pomegranates” (rimmonim) Some Jewish scholars believe that it was the pomegranate that was the forbidden fruit of the Garden of Eden.[54] Pomegranates also symbolize the mystical experience in the Jewish mystical tradition, or kabbalah, with the typical reference being to entering the “garden of pomegranates” or pardes rimonim; this is also the title of a book by the 16th-century mystic Moses ben Jacob Cordovero.

The pomegranate is also connected to Pluto and the underworld… psychic knowledge beyond the veil.

I was going through an old blog of mine and found this, dated:  September 20, 2005 at 2:09 pm

0 Fool

This will be a long w.i.p. (work in progress) as there is so much to learn about a single Tarot card and there are 78 of them! Please free to add your own thoughts and ideas about any of the cards (in their appropriate post). The insights are mine unless I state otherwise. I’m aware of the words of other’s but this category is about reflection. However, under the astrology heading I’m learning more so it might not be my own words (and I will give credit where credit is due). And as I glean new understanding and more knowledge, under headings of interest, I will continue to edit and record.

The Fool is the first card in the Tarot card’s deck of 22 major arcana cards. Twenty-one more cards take us on a journey of a lifetime with all the wonderful up’s and down’s we receive and the Fool sets the pace.

Numerology

Alpha and Omega. Nothing and Everything. Wholeness. Never ending. Duplicity. One half of infinity (the World, being the other half).

Symbology

Mountain: On top of the world (the world being the last card of the major arcana). The Sun: bright , happy, life giving but also destructive. A cut flower: life, beauty, having something to give but also being transient with sure decay in a short while.

Body Language

Human: Arms wide open. A welcoming posture. One foot forward and one back. Moving ahead but also being careful. Dog: Warning or excited to go on the journey.

Colour Psychology

Yellow — light and happy, Red — Passion and risk, Blue – sky (dreaming), Brown – earth (grounded), White – purity and naivitee

Meanings & Ideas

I’m not going to cover how to read upright or reversed cards but rather include insights and ideas about the card’s many meanings.

Astrology & Astronomy

Uranus (no this is not part of your butt — it’s a planet! :-) — energy that needs to be expressed or understood, a psychological function — an ideal, drive, desire, objective, and lessons to be learned. (taken from, astrologyzine.com)
Change, Revolution, Disruption, Originality, Rebelliousness (taken from: Elysian Astrology) Astrology is a weaker area of understanding for me but I’m learning. :-) Archangel Metatron’s planet is Uranus.
